ANIMAZE - Montreal International Animation Film Festival - leMIAFF set to kick off August 17

Montreal film festival partners with Red Cross. Virtual reality to give viewers every stage of the Syrian refugee experience – from the destruction of home-town, dangerous travel with children, violent hostility, police abuse incited by media and right wing politicians in certain western countries. Viewing to generate funds for Syrian refugees

In the face of increasing hostility and violence meted out to ever larger numbers of refugees fleeing violent conflict zones (especially Syria), the Montreal International Animation Film Festival (MIAFF) seeks to reach out to the broader society in a meaningful way.

“I think a film festival should not be about irrelevant snobbery, idle gossip, and cocktail parties, but about how we as artists, can contribute to the cause of humanity”, said MIAFF’s founder and CEO, Laurie Gordon.

Referring to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s documentary, The CalaisJungle, City of Dreams and Lost Hopes, Gordon said, “In light of the increasing official violence directed at refugees fleeing war zones to countries such as France,  in the face of fear and hate mongering from certain media syndicates, so-called conservative politicians, and ultimately, neo Nazi groups – even here in Canada, I think it is important for everybody to experience what it means to have to flee absolute devastation, dispossession, destitution, only to face violent hostility and rejection in Europe.” Gordon continued, “I think as Canadians who have extended a warm welcome people fleeing such tragedies, we should be proud, while also providing the public – particularly those falling prey to fear-inducing diatribes - with the opportunity to FEEL the refugee experience. The best way we can, is through virtual reality.”

Gordon continued, “I was delighted at British virtual reality specialist Neil Bell’s production of Migrant’s Journey, and even more so, at Mr. Bell’s willingness to contribute this most important virtual reality piece to the Montreal International Animation Film Festival” She added, I think that the crisis is of such big proportions, the refugees’ plight so tragic, that I am very happy to b teaming up with the International Committee of the Red Cross’ Montreal branch, as well as certain Syrian outreach community organizations in order to both, showcase what a refugee family experiences, AND to fundraise in order to help people in such distress.”

In addition to Migrant’s Journey, the MIAFF’s partnership with the ICRC extends to the showcasing of the film, Junod, about [Swiss] Dr. Marcel Junod’s heroic provision of medical relief to Hiroshima in the wake of that cit’s destruction by nuclear bombing.

Migrant Journey’s premier, and associated fundraiser is set for August 19th, but the installation whereby anyone wanting to experience it, will be able to do so until 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 20th.

Japan Cuts 2017

Japanese Americans, with a population in excess of 1.4 million, are an important part of the fastest-growing multi-cultural segment of the Asian American population and share with the other Asian-American groups high educational achievements and the highest mean household income($90,000 in 2017). Japanese Americans have strong ties with their cultural heritage as expressed by their access to Japanese films through digital media in the United Sates. They are not, however, as well presented in theatrical distribution.  Data from Mojo covering 417 foreign language films with a box office of 1 million or more from 1980 – 2017 lists four Japanese films (Shall We Dance 1977, Kagemusha 1980, Departure 2009, The Blind Swordsman 2004), whereas Chinese language films, films from India and productions from France and Germany scored higher in theatrical distribution. Films from China and India do best by far outranking France and Germany.  The Japan External Trade Organization emphasizes in an overview of Japanese Film and Television that the content of Japanese productions influence the American entertainment industry through adaptations (Godzilla), source material from manga (Edge of Tomorrow), acquisition of rights to popular Japanese bestselling stories and live action content. Netflix is identified as an active player.  Whereas Japan’s films do not play a dominant role in the United States, the Japanese market is important for American productions since Japan is the 3rd largest global film market after North America and China. In 2014 615 Japanese and 569 imported films were released generating a box office of $1.9 billion. Since 2008 more Japanese than foreign films have been shown each year yet US films retain their leading position. Of the 15 most popular films last year, ten were American.

Japan Cuts presented this year its 11th edition from July 13-23, a program including 28 feature films and 6 shorts. None of the films had been shown before in New York City and 13 were international and North American premieres. An enthusiastic audience took advantage of a rare opportunity to encounter the best and boldest new Japanese cinema enhanced by long Q&A sessions for each production with participating directors, actors and special guests.  Several parties completed the viewing experience and a relatively large part of the audience had attended earlier editions of Japan Cuts and proved familiar with the Japanese visual culture and language.  The 2017 Cut Above Award for Outstanding Performance in Film was presented to Joe Odagiri the “remarkably talented box office golden boy and matinee idol of Japan”.

The 2017 Japan Cuts selection covered a broad range of themes and issues reflecting the complex layers of Japanese culture and the evolving identities as well as recuperating relevant stories from the past. Old master filmmakers such as Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Sion Sono presented their latest films tackling issues of anxiety and the supernatural and the subversion of the Japanese pornographic genre. Other features dealt with the complicated Japan US relationship and the quest for an LGBTQ identity in an oppressive urban environment. In the Classics: Rediscoveries and Restauration rarely screened productions were presented like The Ondekoza by Tai Kato, Once Upon a Time by Kei Shichiri and a gem of avant-garde cinema Sijun Suzuki’s Zigeunerweisen. The documentary section focused on Japanese Americans in WWII internment camps, dolphin hunting in Taji and idol culture in Japan. Two features in Experimental Spotlight explored cinematic forms and an unconventional impressionistic take on fantasy, memory and reality. The Short showcase by new and established film makers  was devoted to a  sexual triangle between a couple and a male lover and its absurd climax, the conflicts experienced by a production intern, an encounter of a white color obsessed t-shirt wearer with a contract killer, and the chase of an asthmatic young man after his deceased boyfriend’s ghost.

The festival was curated by Aiko Masubuchi, Kazu Watanabe, and Joel Neville Anderson who note that, ”…  JAPAN CUTS reveals a cinema contending with crisis and breaking boundaries of form and content, complicating   traditional gender roles and sexuality, addressing traumas of war and racism, uncovering buried histories, and revealing the potential for social resistance”

Daguerrotype, Kiyashi Kurosawa, France 2016

As an international coproduction produced in France and co-funded by the European arte consortium Daguerreotype is for the festival program an unusual film. It is a French language thriller subtitled in English with a Japanese director and European actors. An established fashion photographer Stephane is obsessed with the daguerreotype process and with the image of his wife who killed herself. Their daughter Marie looks like his wife and he gets her image close to perfection in hour long sessions, as if to give immortality to his wife. A young assistant. Jean, helps but falls in love with Marie and designs a plot to sell Stephan’s house and elope with Marie, a plot with disastrous consequences for all evolved.  Supernatural elements such as Stephan’s visions of his deceased wife and the disappearance of Marie add tensions to this superbly executed thriller.

At the Terrace, Kenji Yamauchi, Japan, 2016

A night-time party is given by a company director and his wife for some friends and employees. Reminiscent of a piece of theater the action is confined to the terrace of the director’s home.  Rapid verbal exchanges between the guests and the hosts soon reveal characters hidden behind their normal appearance and socially expected behavior.  Keeping the action to one place with one set only and restricting it to seven actors permits revealing hidden motivations and desires. The result is a comedy with sarcastic overtones. We learn about sexual desires, the interest in the wives of others, rivalries, embarrassing and shaming behavior, secrets of the hosting couple as revealed by their son Teruo who is also attracted to the wife, of one guest, and homosexual desires by two men known to be straight otherwise. Hosts and guests consume more liquor and the social rituals, stratification and masks they adhere too in everyday behavior are abandoned. The unmasking and abandon of constraints so typical for Japanese society is convincingly conveyed by the performance of the seven actors.

Over the Fence, Nobuhiro Yamashita, 2016

Introduced by Joe Odagiri who also plays the principle male role the film received the Tama Cinema Award for best film and best actor (Joe Odagiri) and best actress (Yu Aoi). Over the Fence is an accomplished character study of individuals living at the fringes of society and set in the decaying northern port city of Hakodate, a small city.  Unemployed Shiraiwa joins a vocational carpentry program to ensure getting continued unemployment benefits and meets numerous other young trainees facing the same condition. Recently divorced he left wife and a young child. He lives by himself and seems introverted and withdrawn. Through a co-worker he meets Satoshi, who seems to be his opposite. She is temperamental, extroverted and prone to emotional outburst. She works in a bar and has a job taking care of small animals in a zoo with a special sentiment for birds. No matter what the location may be, she enacts the animals’ behavior imitating mostly birds.  In spite of their differences they are drawn to each other.  Yoshio stays reserved not openly showing emotions while Satoshi seems unable to control hers. Both have insecurities and have been damaged by past experiences. Yoshio is traumatized by his marital experience and is beset by guilt and Satochi is distrustful of those close to her. Over the Fence is an outstanding example of minimalistic Japanese film making.

Pardo d'oro to MRS. FANG by WANG Bing

Pardo d'oro to MRS. FANG by WANG Bing © Locarno Festival

The 2017 edition, the fifth under Carlo Chatrian as artistic director, has ended successfully and has been crowned by the Pardo d’oro for the film MRS. FANG directed by WANG Bing.

261 films in 11 days, 16 under the open sky in the Piazza Grande and 18 in the Concorso internazionale. Among great guests attending this year feature unforgettable greetings to the Piazza by Todd Haynes and by Jean–Marie Straub, the toast by Mathieu Kassovitz, Michel Merkt’s roar and a touched Adrien Brody. José Luis Alcaine, Nastassja Kinski, Aleksander Sokurov have also appeared along with them on stage for the section dedicated to Locarno70 and the Premio Cinema Ticino awarded to Esmé Sciaroni.

Tributes to great artists who have passed on, such as Jeanne Moreau, Hans Hurch and George Romero, have not been forgotten.

In the context of this evening’s Award ceremony on the Piazza Grande, it was announced that the Prix Public UBS is awarded to THE BIG SICK, by Michael Showalter.

Carlo Chatrian, Artistic Director: ”Locarno70 is about to end, and the first provisional assessment is positive. The magical moments that characterised the evenings on the Piazza Grande have been many, just like the guests who offered the public precious moments, or the films that occasioned a full house, or the proposals which aroused interest in the press and professionals. Locarno has confirmed itself as a hub for discerning what direction the currents of independent cinema are taking, but also as a meeting venue between those who create cinema and those who enjoy it, between those who come from very far away and those who on the other hand represent a territory. Seeing the queues outside the new PalaCinema, or the GranRex cinema packed in every one of its rows for a retrospective which has hit its target, fills us with joy and makes us look towards the future with optimism.”

Mario Timbal, Chief Operating Officer: “According to our intentions, this edition wished to be both a celebration for the seventieth anniversary and a springboard for the next years of the Festival at the same time. The rising attendance and the many positive feed-backs we received clearly indicate that our targets have been met. The new screening rooms have consolidated the basic infrastructure of the event, and the meeting areas and many collateral events have demonstrated a great potential which can be developed further over the coming years, allowing the Festival to look confidently towards the future.”

The Awards PDF may be downloaded here.

The evening on the Piazza Grande will end with the official awards and the screening of the closing film GOTTHARD – ONE LIFE, ONE SOUL by Kevin Merz.

The 71st Locarno Festival will take place from 1 to 11 August 2018.

JUNOD: Special Screening from Japan

 Junod: Projection Spéciale Japonais

The story of a 'Hiroshima's Benefactor', a Swiss doctor who became a Japanese hero, travels to MIAFF for a special screening this Saturday at 3.30 pm at the McCord Museum.

The director and producer Shizuko Tsuya was inspired by Swiss doctor Marcel Junod. Ever since marrying and coming to Hiroshima in 1982,

She read Junod’s diary, Warrior without Weapons. As a field delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross, he delivered 15 tons of medical supplies to Hiroshima after the A-bombing. His love of humanity transcended race, nationality and religion.

He moved to Norway in 1999 where he set up his company Putty Studios, and has been working in the film and television industry since. Notable productions include his first short animation film “Remote Descendants” which won a Royal Television Society award, his Amanda-winning work on the series of “Knerten” films as Visual Effects Supervisor, and the internationally successful television shows “DAG” and “Lilyhammer”.

III International Motivational Film and Sport Festival BRIDGE of ARTS, which will take place at Rostov-on-Don from 23 till 27 August 2017, announced full-length films competition program. The program consists of films produced only in 2017. Filmmakers out of 11 countries will compete for the main prize.

«Films differ from each other in their storytelling, genre and director’s vision, but all of them make up a complex pattern of a kaleidoscope symbolizing modern outlook on life, people’s self-identification, expectations of miracles and ways of achieving their goals. Italian senior citizens, a German lad and a Russian women’s facility guard inspire viewers not to give up and to live up to the hilt. The power for creation is always within ourselves and the film selection is aimed to remind viewers about it and motivate them», – Elena Larionova, program director of BRIDGE of ARTS stated.

Non-competition Full-length Program will include best works of 2016-2017 that were not selected into the competition program for various reasons but are really worthy. Many of them will be event films of BRIDGE of ARTS. «World Cinema» program will feature 20 films from Europe, Asia and North America. Some Russian films will be premiered here. For example, world premiere of Romans starring Orlando Bloom took place on 20 July and Rostov will be the first Russian city to screen it. Frémaux unique project united 108 restored short films of Auguste and Louis Lumière. Kalachakra: The Enlightenment  — Immersed in the colorful and vibrant setting of Dharamsala (India), a woman grieving the loss of her sister and 3 individuals from very different backgrounds come together to face their deepest fears as they approach the transformational power of the Kalachakra initiation, led by the Dalai Lama and followed by millions. Workshop to follow.

Kalachakra

City of Joy — What would it be like to live in a place often referred to as the “the worst place in the world to be a woman”? This film follows the first class of students at a remarkable leadership center in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. In this ultimately uplifting film, we witness tremendous resilience as these women transform their devastation into powerful forms of leadership. The film features Eve Ensler of The Vagina Monologues who helped build the City of Joy. Workshop to follow.

RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked the World  —  This is the story of a profound, and until now, missing chapter in the history of American music: the Native American influence. FIN: Atlantic International Film Festival announces its full program today, featuring over 120 film screenings and a full slate of special events, to be presented over eight days in Halifax, September 14-21.

"As Atlantic Canada’s curator of epic and unforgettable stories this year’s program delivers like never before. Incredible regional films sit alongside some of the best the screens of the world have to offer to ensure our audiences are going to be wowed in a major way”, said Wayne Carter, Executive Director.

The Opening Night Gala returns to the Dalhousie Arts Centre’s Rebecca Cohn Auditorium on Thursday, September 14 at 7 p.m. This year’s Opening Night Gala is part of the Movie Nights Across Canada initiative. A project by Canadian Heritage and Telefilm Canada, Movie Nights Across Canada is a cross-country tour celebrating past, present and emerging Canadian talent – those in front and behind the camera – who make our country’s screen-based industry world-famous. Each Movie Nights Across Canada event happens in partnership with its host province, cultural agencies and private sector sponsors. The screenings welcome a diverse audience of cultural, business and community leaders.

Long Time Running, by celebrated documentary filmmakers Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier, is this year’s Opening Night Gala presentation. Long Time Running follows The Tragically Hip’s iconic 2016 Man Machine Poem Tour across Canada and the final concert in their hometown of Kingston, after the band’s announcement that lead singer Gord Downie was diagnosed with incurable brain cancer. For a generation, The Hip, more than any other band in this country, have given us a kind of national soundtrack: we have taken their music and woven it into what it means to be Canadian. The Man Machine Poem Tour provided a collective moment for all of us to celebrate, appreciate, mourn and reflect. Long Time Running captures that moment in all its complexity and freezes it in time.

Following the Opening Night Gala film presentation is the FIN: Atlantic International Film Festival’s “Movie Nights Across Canada” Opening Night Celebration. Penned as one of Halifax’s ‘most anticipated parties of the year’, this red-carpet event will take place at the Via Rail Halifax Train Station on Thursday, Sept. 14, starting at 9 p.m.

The Festival's Closing Night Gala, presented by the Lord Nelson Hotel on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m., will be Call Me by Your Name. Written and directed by Luca Guadagnino (A Bigger Splash) the film is set in the north of Italy in the summer of 1983. Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), a precocious 17-year-old American-Italian boy spends his days in his family’s 17th century villa transcribing and playing classical music, reading, and flirting with his friend Marzia (Esther Garrel). One day, Oliver (Armie Hammer), a charming American scholar working on his doctorate, arrives as the annual summer intern tasked with helping Elio’s father. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of the setting, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever.

Following the Closing Night Gala film presentation, the Festival’s time honoured Closing Night Party will take place at The Lord Nelson Hotel starting at 9 p.m.

In addition to the Festival’s Opening and Closing Nights, this year’s Gala Presentations lineup will feature both 6:30pm and 9:30pm screenings. Featured in the 6:30 p.m. Gala Presentations are Atlantic Canadian productions, The Child Remains (Michael Melski) and Black Cop (Cory Bowles), along with an impressive international slate, including Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool (Paul McGuigan) and BPM (Beats Per Minute) (Robin Campillo).

Also included in the 6:30 p.m. Gala Presentations are two short film programs. The first is The Reel East Coast Shorts Gala, presented by CBC, features nine short films on Sunday, Sept. 17. The evening will feature works by an impressive cast of Atlantic Canadian filmmakers, including: Gwyneth Christoffel (Torture by Sound); Amy Bourgaize (Chiaroscuro); Kevin Fraser (Invading Giants); Daniel Boos (Thug); Dominic Fegan (Roller Skates and Hand Grenades); Nicole Steeves & Struan Sutherland (Dogged); Wanda Nolan (Crocuses); Andrew Coll (Duet); and Adam Perry (A Blessing from the Sea).

The second is the From Away Gala, featuring a screening including 10 finalists from the From Away Post Secondary Competition on Tuesday, Sept. 19. Presented in partnership with Canadian Heritage/Canada150, Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier21, RBC, Bell Media/CTV Atlantic, the National Film Board of Canada and Telefilm Canada, From Away is a film competition for Atlantic Canadian post-secondary students, produced by the Atlantic International Film Festival as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. Post-secondary student filmmakers were asked to examine, explore or celebrate Canada as home as both a concrete and abstract space - a landscape, a person, a feeling, a memory - through the medium of film. A reception will follow the From Away Gala film presentation at Pier 21 that evening, starting at 8 p.m.

New to this year’s Festival is a series of Gala Presentations starting at 9:30 p.m. from Sept. 15-20. East Coast talent is represented in Room for Rent (Matthew Atkinson) and starring Halifax’s own Mark Little (Mr. D, Rollertown), along with Seth Smith’s elevated horror, The Crescent. Some of the year’s most anticipated films of the year will be presented, including Mary Shelly (Haifaa Al-Mansour), Rebel in the Rye (Danny Strong); Borg/McEnroe (Janus Metz) and Happy End (Michael Haneke).

Los Cabos International Film Festival is pleased to announce three new prizes in its 2017 edition. In addition to being the most important film and cultural meeting point between Mexico, the USA, and Canada, it is still the festival which confers the largest number of awards in all of Latin America.

The Festival’s organizers believe supporting film-makers and the exhibition of their film and television projects to be essential. To this effect, during each edition, the Festival takes on the task of creating a substantial call for entries that achieves the goals both in the selection of feature films in our Official Selection and in the project hatchery of the Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund. That is why the aforementioned three new prizes encourage the development of works in progress with the following features and amounts:

-Los Cabos Work In Progress Prize. The best Mexican feature film at the postproduction stage will receive a cash prize of $120,000.00 pesos.

-Una Voz Con Todos Prize. Thanks to the Mexican Public Broadcasting System’s Channel 30, for the first time we will award a prize to a TV series at the development stage, consisting of a cash prize of $100,000.00 pesos.

-Chemistry Prize. For the first time, this post-production company will award a $300,000.00 pesos prize in services to a TV pilot for a series at the development stage.

These three prizes come as an addition to the other nine which the Festival previously awarded, for a total of twelve.

With each edition the Festival builds new valuable alliances in favor of Mexican film-makers. Each and everyone of our international partners plays a key role in the development and promotion of the films, projects and TV series which are part of the current edition.

We thank Cinemex, FIPRESCI, Labodigital, CTT Exp & Rentals, Una Voz Con Todos and Chemistry for supporting our sixth edition and contributing to the creation of new stories.

The invitation to our Official Selection will remain open until the 25th of August. The invitation for film and television works in development and Work in Progress projects, has been extended until September the 1st.

Junod teaser Gala Screening At Montreal International Film Festival

JUNOD: Special Screening from Japan
