The Garden State Film Festival To Present Again in Asbury Park
Video Junkee 2017, a new festival for creators and lovers of video, kicks off this week (July 28 – 29)
Video Junkee 2017, a new festival for creators and lovers of video, kicks off this week (July 28 – 29) with a full program of events, talks and screenings taking over Sydney’s Carriageworks, Dendy Newtown and Golden Age Cinema.
The Festival has a range of exclusive screening events to excite lovers of video.
Don’t miss a screening of This is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous, which portrays the intimate journey of Gigi Lazzarato, a fearless young woman who began life as Gregory, posting beauty and fashion videos to YouTube only to later come out as a transgender female to an audience of millions. Presented by YouTube Red Originals, the film provides a raw and revealing look into a life that never compromises happiness, and spotlights a family's unwavering and unconditional love for a child.
Arguably one of the biggest success stories of 2014, Wyrmwood crowdfunded its way into cinemas and reintroduced the world to the classic Aussie horror flick. Now a cult film with a TV series in the works, the film is getting a special Festival screening at Dendy Newtown: book tickets now to enjoy all the blood and guts.
Sit back, cuddle a purring puss and relax in the Festival’s very own cat café at Carriageworks. Here, YouTube Red presents the documentary, Kedi, a “cat’s eye” journey through the winding streets of Istanbul, where street cats have become an essential part of the fabric of the city.
Foxtel present a screening of their soon-to-be-released film Australia Day. Iconic actor Bryan Brown leads a stellar cast, directed by acclaimed film and television director Kriv Stenders in this film that exposes intolerance and prejudice across the spectrum of Australian society. Catch Australia Day at Dendy Newtown.
Settle in for a night of laughs at Golden Age Cinema, which is presenting a special Comedians Talking Over Movies screening for Video Junkee 2017. Funny fellas Kyran Wheatley and Rhys Nicholson will join forces with hilarious sisters Hannah Reily and Eliza Reily to provide humorous musings on the animated classic Space Jam, live, on-stage, as it plays before the audience.
Golden Age screenings continue with two riveting nights of programming thanks to ABC iview. Catch The Edge of the Bush by comedian Anne Edmonds, who plays multiple, multigenerational members of the same estranged family. Plus, don’t miss The Glass Bedroom, a six-part series profiling six Australian artists who use Instagram to create bold new works to share with their thousands of followers. Plus, you can hobnob with the creative geniuses themselves: they’ll be in attendance at the screenings.
And SBS On Demand will present a Mystery Screening at Carriageworks. As the Australian home of The Handmaid’s Tale,Vikings and Midnight Sun, SBS On Demand has a growing reputation for its premium global offerings. Get a sneak peek at their next must-see titles, the only catch is you won’t know the line-up until the day of.
If you’re a lover, a creator or a consumer of video then head along to Video Junkee 2017 in Sydney to hear from the leaders in video and get a glimpse of what and who Australia are watching in 2017.
Screening Tickets (from $12) and General Tickets ($19) are on sale now with LimitedMulti-Pass Tickets ($89-$199) also available, giving attendees priority access to keynotes, talks, sessions, screenings and more.

Leopoldo Soto, filmfestivals.com correspondent
Guanajuato Film Festival founded and directed by Sarah Hoch, - started as a festival dedicated to shorts - used to be one of the emerging festivals in Mexico; Then in America; And twenty years later, with International presence; Collapses due to an inappropriate censorship of the most respected press not only in Mexico, but abroad.
Excluding is a form of censorship. To Columba Vértiz, of the influential Proceso Magazine; Journalist and internationally respected publication; she was denied accreditation; As well as to Sergio Raúl López, editor of "Toma" magazine, a specialized magazine, a must-see, whose entire collection is housed in the Mexican Cinemateque, awarded this year by the Publishing Industry; Is another of the prestigious journalists who were denied access to the press room. Curiously both, have seriously, and positively reported for years, the activities of the festival.
Jorge Caballero, leading cultural journalist, from "La Jornada", critic and objective, has denounced in his daily chronicles, censorship to a press, prestigious all of it, that curiously has objectively publicized the festival.
With Daniela Michel, director of the Morelia festival; One of the most important in the world; Sarah Hoch, has a rough relationship.
Disappointing for the public, as for the press, the attitude of an American born, youn girl, that choose San Miguel de Allende, as home, who always had a cathy of sympathy.
Now seems to ignore that the festivals are made with public funds - as she herself has stated, there are 17 Million Pesos (almost million dollars) a she should be respectful of it. The promotion of destiny is one of the objectives of the festivals; And Sarah is accomplishing it, but a negative sense, in the same proportion that has grown; Now it is negatively .
What is the meaning of creating so many frictions ..? .. Sara had built a human festival., Hopefully she get again the course .. Remember the quote from "Under the Volcano" by Lowry: "Take care of this garden that is yours" .. "Do not destroy what you love."

MIAFF Student film goes VIRAL with 5 million views! New Pixar style movie In a Heart Beat at Animaze
Student filmmakers Esteban Bravo (left) and Beth David Courtesy of Esteban Bravo and Beth David
The Montreal International Animation Film Festival is one of the first festivals to confirm an exclusive screening of In a Heartbeat a short animation film in the student film competition taking the internet by storm going viral with over 5 million views in just a few days.
Two animation students at Ringling School of Art and Design in Florida were able to raise more than $14,000 on Kickstarter to finance the making of "In a Heartbeat last December. When a trailer for the film was finally released in the spring, the short clip went viral across social media and was viewed more than one million times.
Now the completed animated short film — titled “In a Heartbeat” — has just been released on Vimeo and Youtube, and the YouTube clip alone has garnered nearly 2.4 million views in just one day. David and Bravo hope the film can help tackle what they believe is a lack of LGBTQ representation in media and animation.
BRAVO and see you in Montreal! August 17 - 20

2017 New York Asian Film Festival
The festival presents popular Asian cinema in North America and has been identified as “the best film festival in New York byThe Village Voice and as “one of the city’s most valuable events” by the New York Times. Because of its reputation the festival has been expanding its program and audience, approaching now more than 6000 people. NYAFF is growing even though two similar film festivals, Japan Cuts and the Asian American International Film Festival take place in New York during July and early August.
Celebrating its 16th anniversary the New York Asian Film Festival was held from June 30 – July 16 in collaboration with subway cinema and the Film Society of Lincoln Center presenting 57 films which were all produced in 2016 and 2017. The festival introduced the new juried NYAFF Main Competition with seven films by first- and second-time directors who had this year their North-American premiere. Honored this year were Eric Tsang, Hong-Kong with the Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award, Gang Dong-won, South Korea with the Star Asia Award and Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying, Thailand with the Screen International Rising Star. Duan Yihong received the Star Asia Award, recognizing his body of work. He is the first actor from China to whom this award was presented. The newly created Excellence in Action Cinema Award was given to South Korea’s Jung Byung-gil. More than 30 filmmakers, and celebrity guests from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia attended the festival. Featured in the main competition were With Prisoner (Andrew Wong, Hong Kong), A Double Life (Yoshiyuki Kishi, Japan), Jane (Cho Hyun-hoon, South Korea) The Gangster’s Daughter (Chen Mei-juin, Taiwan), Bad Genius (Nattawut Poonpiriya, Thailand), Birdshot (Mikhail Red, Philippines) and Kfc (Le Binh Giang, Vietnam). Bad Genius won the Best Feature award. Japan’s A Double Life received the Special Mention Award and the Vietnamese director of Kfc Le Binh Giang was given an Honorable Mention as the Most Promising Director.
NYAFF presented 6 films from China, 10 films from Hong Kong in the special Hong Kong Panorama section, 15 films from Japan, 12 films from South Korea,7 films from Taiwan, 3 films from the Philippines, and one each from Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. It is interesting that 23 of the 57 films shown at the NYAFF were Chinese language productions. There were 13 features from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan in the program of the Asian American International Film Festival scheduled in New York from July 26 to August 5 2017. Chinese language films are served by well-established festival outlets in New York City. This may account for the absence of a Chinese Film Festival in New York City, though it may be politically problematic to include Taiwan in such festival.
In 2016 the festival changed its focus towards China and South East Asia, a reorientation maintained this year with an emphasis on “Young Blood”, new film makers from Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Panorama part of the festival program also reflects the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Hong Kong as a Special Administrative Region of China replacing the British control. What is also emphasized is the attempt to provide more inclusivity of the story of Asian cinema by including Asian-American films and more documentaries. Programming of the festival reflects these changes. From Hong Kong’s Young Blood the selection of 6 new film makers mirrors the fact that 28 directors made their debut there over the last 12 month. The rise of China propels Chinese language films having become Asia’s leading producer of genre films and mainland China as essential for co-production enterprises and for the exhibition of foreign language films be they Americans or Indians. There are relatively few South East Asian films in the program but from the festival’s perspective articulated in the catalogue “Southeast Asian cinema has the potential to become an idea factory for global cinema. The Vietnamese film Kfc is an example of how all boundaries of traditional filmmaking can be broken. In the festival program there is also a stress on South Korean filmmakers holding up a critical image of their society and its “moral sewers” and on the Taiwanese “resurgence with new films by some of its cinema’s best directors”.
Birdshot, Mikhail Red, Philippines / Quatar, 2016 Set in an isolated rural environment Mikhail Red presents the story of the cover up of a dozen murdered farm laborers and the embrace of violence. A bus with farm worker passengers disappears and an eager young policeman, Domingo tries to solve the crime. Maya, an innocent young teenager living with her father Diego, the caretaker of the fields adjoining their home, kills a rare protected eagle in a nature reserve. In spite of some evidence that a powerful landowner is behind the murder as evidenced by testimony from the wife of a missing worker and the eventual discovery of the workers’ corpses Domingo is forced to abandon his quest to solve the crime due to the orders by his superiors and threats to his young wife and infant child. He and his fellow officer Mendoza are instead commanded to find out who shot the eagle. Domingo readily embraces the lawless and rule breaking behavior of his corrupt senior officers and takes part in the torture of Diego who was ordered to the police station. Diego denies having any knowledge about the eagle. Diego manages to escape and the following morning kills Mendoza and is gunned down himself by officers trying to bring him back in. Maya has a chance to shoot a wounded Domingo but lets him live. All the characters live on the fringes of society where survival is the principle goal and only those with power win. Domingo adapts to the firmly entrenched violence surrounding him and his family. In her first acting performance as teenaged Maya, Mary Joy Apostol provides an outstanding performance.
Bad Genius, Nattawut Poonpiriya, Thailand, 2017 As an international premiere Bad Genius was the opening film of the festival. It provided a striking perspective on the Thai high school milieu and the impact of class structure on that system. Those with financial means can purchase their success and those without it have a chance of survival only if their intelligence is great enough. The genius student Lynn has no problem succeeding in an elite high school and can map out her great future. For a friend who has more money than brains she devises a successful multiple choice cheating system which other students learn about. Those applying to an American Ivy League school as Lynn does need to take an exam in Sydney. She develops a sophisticated cheating system and trains students how to use it. The fee they pay her will be used to finance her studies. She takes the exam but a fellow genius student spills the beans. Both are expelled from the high school. Bank suggests setting up a system to beat all US university entrance examinations. Lynn is ambivalent.
A Double Life, Yoshiyuki Kishi, Japan, 2016 This film offers the audience a startling investigation of the question of identity, who we are and why we exist. Tama, a philosophy student is unable to complete her work on what it means to be human and appears disconnected from her world and herself. Her professor, Shinohara, proposes to follow a randomly chosen person carefully recording that person’s habits and secrets. She picks a book editor who lives across the street and is a family man with a child and dedicated wife. In her pursuit stalking him she discovers that he has an affair, and observes him and his lover having sex in an alley. His work interaction with a writer in a restaurant is also noted. She collects information about him from a neighbor taking care of the residents’ garbage and carefully records what happens to him including his wife’s suicide attempt. At one point he confronts Tama and accuses her of tailing him. Tama responds that she is not allowed to talk with him, an answer he does not understand. He cannot understand her motivations and suspects that she was hired by his wife to follow him. Tama cannot relate to those close to her or express her emotions. Her boyfriend leaves her because she cannot give him an answer as to why they are together. The deepest parts of her have somehow remained empty but since she started tailing others those parts seem to fill up. She derives meaning by experiencing others. Her professor encourages her research and suggests small changes in her thesis. As he suggests, placing yourself in someone else’s life is a path to know yourself and passion may be the only way to truly value another human being.
The Gangster’s Daughter, Mei-juin Chen, Taiwan 2016 Separated from her parents Shaowu is raised by her grandmother on a remote island. When her mother passes away she meets for the first time her father Keiko at the funeral. Her father makes his living as a gangster and she is sent to live with him in Taipei because she had problems at the local school. As an independent spirit her adjustment to urban life and the new school is difficult. She gets attached to her father, though troubled by her father’s involvement in the criminal world. Abiding by his old criminal codes Keiko refuses to get involved with the drug trade though his bosses urge him to do so. One afternoon he discovers in Shaowu’s bag a cigarette box with hidden drugs which had been given to her by a school mate. The platform for inevitable conflict between Keiko and the bosses is set.

HIGHLIGHTS from 70th Locarno Festival – DAY 2 !
Jameson CineFest, 8 to 17 September reveals line up
Hungary's leading film event and biggest international film festival Jameson CineFest, 8 to 17 September, brings the freshest and most outstanding film selection to Hungary again: feature films, shorts, documentaries and animations that are domestic, some of them Central European premieres – for the 14th time.
In the feature competition program we selected films that show all the happenings of the cinematic world of the year. Unconventional pieces like Bruno Dumont’s Jeannette, a musical on Jeanne d’Arc’s childhood that is the quasi-unmake of the genre, or Loving Vincent, a British-Polish coproduction that is unique and remarkable because it is the world’s first fully painted feature film. After the Mediterranea, Jonas Caprignano is back to the CineFest with his second feature, A Ciámbra, a true coming of age story as it has never been showed before and also spin-off since one of the supporting characters from the director’s first feature has been given a film of his own now.
The worst and most cruel mother of the world is brought to us by the Mexican thriller-drama April’s Daughter, which is absolutely eerie up to the last frame. A unique love between two men is pictured in the Scottish movie God’s Own Country and we also have the world’s newest sweetheart, Columbus, a poetic tale of emotions conquering against all odds in the program.
Talking about stars, the action-madness of the Safdie brothers Good Time starring Robert Pattinson will only be shown in the big screen at the Jameson CineFest before premiering on Netflix. Francesca Eastwood delivers the best performance of her career in Natala Leite’s M.F.A., raising several hard questions on moral and ethics. Dakota Fanning shows why she is considered an actress of great expectations in the Brimstone that is really not for the faint hearted. Mark Hamill plays a surprising character in Brigsby Bear, a lovable tale from the crossroad of past and future.
A Hungarian movie A hetedik alabárdos, directed by Csaba Vétkes has also made into the competition program. It is the first film that has been shot in the framework of the Incubator program run by the Hungarian National Film Fund. The first Russian feature film in Miskolc, Arrhythmia, features a drunkard paramedic who wants to save himself and his marriage in this twisted world of ours.
In the Open Eye selection we show films that have already proven themselves in the international world of cinema events. The Swedish director’s, Ruben Öslund’s movie The Square is full of hilarious jokes and won the Golden Palm in Cannes. The closing film of the festival is Stephen Frears’ Victoria and Abdul, premiering in Hungary at the CineFest. The director who has a history with the lives of Queens turns to the special relationship between Queen Victoria and her Indian servant, Abdul, aka the Munshi. The Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer in the Israeli Focus is a sweet tale of honesty, friendship, manipulation and politics. A real rarity among movies intended for an adult audience but lacking sex and shocking violence. We only get Richard Gere who reminds us of Woody Allen this time. The Sense of an Ending is also screened in the Open Eye selection. The adaptation of Julian Barnes novel features Jim Broadbent in an excellent role. Suicide, forbidden love, intricate emotions – a remarkable movie. Siberian Love is a truly unique documentary on the fact that in this part of Russia the aim and epiphany of a woman’s life is still having a family and children.
