The Begining of the Festivities here in Cannes

Hello From Cannes,

It's hard to believe what will become of all this set up in just a few days now!  My enjoyment of it all is watching it all come together and this small little world famous town is well underway!  The office of Tourism has stopped all tours now as the festival takes center stage.  Every small business you can imagine is out making their presence known.  This stunning event will air on the 17th so be ready and make sure you watch the red carpet!

I'm very happy I can walk to the event and not rely on Uber or taxis that will be impossible to say the least.  Not to mention the tiny sea side cafes I've come to enjoy will be something soon will be something I will look on from a distance.  Ever so grateful in my planning as the grocery is minutes from my flat!

Cheers from Cannes,

Robin

As the excitement grows here is what it is happening now here.  In just a few days it will look just fabulous!  As more and more people arrive the streets and stores and restaurants become busier and busier! Stay tuned.

Cheers from Cannes,

Robin

Blue Chairs of the Promenade des Anglais

Hello From Cannes!

Amazing these simple chairs fascinated me so much I came home and did some research they are everywhere I hope you enjoy what I found out about them.  I sat for hours and knitted and watched all the wonderful people.  I find this is a regular stop for me on my daily walks to read or knit.  Some days I just sit and just enjoy where I am.

In 1950 with the increase of tourism to Nice, the Ville de Nice ordered 800 chairs from a certain Monsieur Ballanger who held the concession for renting out chairs on the Promenade des Anglais. These could be hired for a modest sum, for which, upon payment you would be handed a receipt with the words “droit de s’asseoir” (permission to sit).

Why Blue?
Of course – the big question is why are these chairs blue? Is it be to be in harmony with the azure sea or pay homage to the workers, dressed in blue overalls, who repaired the Promenade des Anglais after the WW2? In fact, it is neither. It is simply because that particular shade of blue was in vogue when holidays along the Riviera (and particularly Nice and Cannes) became fashionable in the 1950s.

Giant 2-Dimensional Blue Chair
On Saturday, 4th October 2014, a giant 2-dimensional blue chair was unveiled by Christian Estrosi, deputy-mayor of Nice and President of the Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur in the presence of the Niçoise artist, Sabine Géraudite.  Entitled “Oeuvre de SAB inspirée de la Chaise bleue de la Promenade des Anglais” (translation: Work of SAB inspired by the Promenade des Anglais blue chair) it is an homage the artist wanted to make to these iconic chairs for many years.

Change of Design
In the 1970s, the Ville de Nice commissioned another batch of chairs with a company based in the Haute Loire.

The present model, redesigned by the French designer and architect, Jean-Michel Wilmotte, were painted sky blue to complement the azure waters of the Baie des Anges, and placed on the Promenade in 1996. The Ville de Nice ordered 2,000 of these very elegant chairs, but due to “misappropriation” (ie. stolen as they could be easily picked up) only around 700 were left.

During clashes involving anti-capitalist demonstrators that erupted at the European Union summit in Nice in 2000, dozens of the blue chairs had to be withdrawn from service after they had been hurled at riot police and damaged.

May 17 will mark the beginning of Cannes 70th edition, kicking off a busy schedule of screenings and many side events. Herewith your program  of 12 days of celebration!

From the Opening Ceremony to the awards ceremony on Sunday, May 18th, both emceed by Monica Bellucci, the Festival will celebrate its 70th edition by initiating brand new tailor-made events and inviting numerous stars and personalities.

PUBLISHING OF CES ANNEES-LA (EDITIONS STOCK), the anniversary book, an anthology of original reports on their Cannes experience by sixty French and foreign journalists.

On the opening night, from early evening until late at night, the Festival offers a WELCOME PARTY to greet the festival-goers and the press. The party will take place on the Plage du Majestic (Majestic beach) as well as on the Agora, with live music by the Fantasy Live Experience Orchestra and DJ Daddy Ryton.

After the party on Friday, May 12th organized for professionals based in Cannes, three dinners will be held in honour of different components of the international film community:

  • on Friday, May 19th, in the Grand Salon of the Carlton Hotel, a dinner for the film industry professionals present in Cannes. On this occasion, a tribute will be paid to American producer Jeffrey Katzenberg.
  • on Saturday, May 20th, at the Agora, the “dinner of the Festivals” will reunite 150 directors of the greatest film festivals in the world.
  • on Thursday, May 25th, in the Grand Salon of the Carlton Hotel, the “Press dinner” will gather 250 international journalists and critics present in Cannes.

On May 23rd, the anniversary evening will celebrate the 70th season in exceptional style. Under the presidency of Isabelle Huppert, the stage of the Grand Théâtre Lumière will feature screenings, edited archives and film extracts, musical interludes and presentations by artists. The traditional anniversary dinner will bring together all the major figures at Cannes that evening, including many artists who have won the Palme d’or, or have left their mark on the history of the Festival.

On the Plage Macé (Macé beach), for festival-goers and Cannes inhabitants

Like every year, screenings will take place at the Cinéma de la Plage every night at 9:30 PM on the Plage Macé (Macé beach). On the same beach, two open-air concerts will be held for this anniversary edition:

Sunday 21 May: an exceptional concert with -M-, who will present his new album "ÎL" EST UNE ÂME, le Baptême de LAMOMALI, accompanied by star African kora players Toumani and Sidiki Diabaté, Malian soul diva Fatoumata Diawara (discovered thanks to the success of Abderrahmane Sissako’s Timbuktu). Free entrance upon presentation of a ticket to be collected at the Cannes city hall and at the Festival.

Thursday 25 May: a second exceptional show, performed by TONY GATLIF AND HIS REBETIKO BAND, popular Greek music, followed by the premiere screening of his latest film, Djam (France-Turkey, 2017, 1h37), a musical journey through Turkey full of hope and sharing.

To increase the number of screenings, access to films in the Official Selection will be extended with extra screenings at 8:30 AM in the Debussy Theatre, 8 PM and 10 PM at the Olympia and noon at the Salle du Soixantième.

On the 4th floor of the Palais des Festivals, a new reception venue, the Terrasse des Journalistes, will be inaugurated on Wednesday, May 17th. During the whole Festival, it will be dedicated to journalists, enabling them to meet up in the best possible conditions in between screenings. The Terrace will be open every day from 10 AM to 7 PM.

Following on from Festival TV created in 2002, Cannes will inaugurate Radio Festival, its official web radio, which will, alongside programmes from the archives and live broadcasts from the major events, feature discussion forums on the cinema of the future. Podcasts from May 17th on. Operator: Moustic.

On the Web, the history of the event can now be viewed online on the new official site, designed to showcase the archives, with articles, photos, videos, reports, correspondence and rare documents (in collaboration with the Cinémathèque française, INA, AFP and Getty Images.)

The 4th floor of the Palais will host an exhibition of photos and videos initiated by INA and taken from their archives: 24 Images, the Festival de Cannes seen through the eyes of Pierre Lescure, Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux, looking back over the major milestones in the event’s history.

A prize will be given to photographers by a dedicated jury, to discover the most striking images and reward, at the end of the Festival, the best photos from the 70th season, as a tribute to press photographers who have also contributed to the Festival’s legend.

Cannes Classics will showcase films that have made Festival history, from the Palme d’or winners which have changed the course of cinema, such as Henri-Georges Clouzot’s The Wages of Fear in 1953 or Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up in 1967, to rare and restored films, enjoying a new outing at Cannes, such as the Lebanese film Ila Ayn? at which director Georges Nasser will himself be present 60 years after its first screening in 1957. A Polish delegation will also attend the event to honour the memory of filmmaker Andrzej Wajda for the screening of Man of Iron, winner of the 1981 Palme d’or.

And finally, the city of Cannes is in sync with the celebration. To celebrate the 70thedition of the Festival, the Cannes Town Hall has organised a series of events throughout the year devoted to cinema: a logo in effigy form of the 70 years of the Festival, a permanent red carpet, photographs of the stars by Gilles Traverso, masterclasses, exhibitions, meetings, a temporary museum, open-air screenings… and during the Festival in particular, the exhibition Cannes fait le mur, giant screens and a pétanque game, co-organized by the Festival de Cannes.

Many important figures will attend the Festival, and in particular the anniversary night. From May 17th to May 28th, the screenings will be exceptional as well, welcoming the following guests of honour:

CLINT EASTWOOD, who was President of the Jury in 1994, and will be in Cannes from 19 to 21 May. On Saturday 20th May at 4:45 PM, he will be at the Debussy Theatre to present the restored copy of Unforgiven, which is celebrating its own 25th anniversary at the Festival with Warner. The following day, he will inaugurate the 70th ANNIVERSARYMASTERCLASS with a discussion in the company of American critic Kenneth Turan, in the Buñuel screening room at 4 PM.

JANE CAMPION, who presided the Feature Film Jury in 2014 and remains to this day the only female director to have garnered a Palme d’or for The Piano in 1993, will present her latest work on Tuesday 23rd May, Top of the Lake: China Girl, which she co-directed with Ariel Kleiman.

DAVID LYNCH, 1990 winner of the Palme d’or with Wild at Heart, Best Director in 2001 with Mulholland Drive and President of the Jury in 2002, will return to the Festival to present Season 3 of Twin Peaks on Thursday 25th May at 7:30 PM in the Grand Théâtre Lumière.

Throughout the Festival, ALEJANDRO G. IÑÁRRITU, the visionary director of Birdman and The Revenant, and winner of the Best Director for Babel, will present his 6 minutes 30 seconds film Carne y Arena, an immersive experience within an incredible Virtual Reality installation.

ALFONSO CUARÓN, a member of the Feature Film Jury in 2008, director, producer and screenwriter, will also give a Masterclass, in the company of film critic Michel Ciment on Wednesday 24th May at 4:30 PM in the Buñuel screening room, during which they will discuss his career in Hollywood and Mexico.

On Monday 22 May, the Debussy Theatre will host a TRIBUTE TO ANDRÉ TÉCHINÉ. The French director, who was a member of the Feature Film Jury in 1999, has presented 11 films in the Official Selection since 1975, including 6 in Competition. His new film, Nos années folles, will be screened to mark the occasion. Those who have accompanied him in his movies throughout the years will be present.

Finally, in memory of the immense ABBAS KIAROSTAMI, winner of the 1997 Palme d’or for Taste of Cherry, who died on 4 July 2016, there will be a screening of his posthumous film 24 Frames. The session will take place on Tuesday 23 May in the presence of his friends and his son Ahmad Kiarostami.

Two actresses, whose commitment to the Festival in recent years has been plain to see, will enjoy their first experience at Cannes as short films directors and will be present on the Croisette.

ROBIN WRIGHT: at the opening of Cannes Classics on Thursday 18 May in the Buñuel screening room at 8 PM, the actress, producer and now director will come to present her first short, The Dark of Night, homage to film noir. It will be followed by the screening of the restored copy of Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz, winner of the Palme d’or in Cannes in 1980.

KRISTEN STEWART: after starring in the last two years in the films of Woody Allen and Olivier Assayas and winning a Best Supporting Actress Cesar, the young American actress will come to present Come Swim – her first work as a director – on Saturday 20 May at 6:45 PM.

Cannes 2017: Jury Press Conference

The 70th edition of the festival kicks off tonight with Ismael's Ghosts by Arnaud Desplechin starring Mathieu Amalric and Marion Cotillard.

Earlier today the International Jury priseided by Pedro Almodovar gave their press conference in advance of watching all films in competition and awarding the prestigious Palme D' Or on May 28th.

Along with Pedro Almodovar, co-jurors Jessica Chastain (actress), Maren Ade (director), Fan Bingbing (actress, producer), Agnes Jaoui (actress), Park Chan-Wook (director), Will Smith (actor, producer, singer), Paolo Sorrentino (Director) and Gabriel Yared (Music Composer) the jurt arrived at the Palais and spoke about the excitement of seeing all the films in this year's selection but also referred to one of the hottest topics of this year's festival - Netflix.

As two films in this year's selection are produced by the online platform giant, the festival had to reopen the books and change its policy regarding selected films, taht being from next year on films will have to secure French distribution as part of the deal.

Pedro Almodovar, when asked about the topic, stood on the side of French art house cinemas and that it is alwasy better to "watch films on the big screen". On the other hand, his co-juror Will Smith, seem to be swimming against the current by openly supporting Netflix, being the platform that gave his children the opportunty to get into acting and work in new projects.

From the sound of it, the 70th edition of the festival and the awards next week could be more surprising that expected.

The film festivals team is here to give you all festival and market news, so stay tuned.

Robin Wright: Women in Film

Text and photos: Martin I. Petrov

While the world is in expectation of the new House of Cards season, coming on Netflix at the end of May, Robin Wright attended the very first Women in Film talk presented by Kering and Variety, in advance of the premiere of her short film The Dark of Night, at the opening of Cannes Classics tonight at 8 pm at the Bunuel Theatre.

The American actress, producer and director spoke about the empowering change for women in the film industry, about her experineces as a young actress and how she became a strong, independent and less vulnerable female actor. In refernce to her early year, Wright noted how sexist her first casting experiences felt and that it took a long time for women to be able to request equal pay and rights, but now "it is time, for women in film"!

Speaking about the upcoming House of Cards season, Wright didn't hide that the current American politics have inspired most of it, making the series more relevant than ever in the US and beyond. "Michelle Obama would make a great president, I think her time will come soon" said the actress in response to a question about women in US politics.

The inspiration for an actress and activist like Robin Wright comes from travelling to places and connecting with people. "Observing human dynamics is what keeps me moving. 'Touching' people's hearts gets me excited to explore, see things and tell stories."

Wright got her directorial baprism on the set of House of cards and now her debut short film tells the story of an unemployed insurance adjuster who ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. "I was really overwhelmed the first time behind the camera - didn't really know what to do. But what I've learned is to never say 'don't'. It automatically makes people concious that they are doing something wrong." The film was shot in one day in Baltimore with the entire crew of House of Cards volunteering to make it happen and crowdfunding to get the production off the ground.

Finally, commenting on the Netflix conflict with the festival in regards to cinema distribution rights of their films in France, Wright avoided a direct comment. "I obviously work for a company in the US and we make streaming content, available in a format unseen and unknown to us before, which is so unique. I think we need to focus on the difference this makes".

Hello From Cannes

By now everyone has seen the excitement all over TV and Watching so there is nothing new I can add here other than it is truly an amazing event to be a part of! Watching it all come together and have a very tiny piece was wonderful.  Now it's time to see movies for me the rest of the time I'm here.  In none of my photos will be be able to see Uma Thurman signing utographs or Susan Sarandon arriving in all her glory. Robin Wright also gave us all there a great smile with her amazing dress and I noticed her great shoes!

The dresses were stunning and I still cant pick my favorite! As the week continues non stop I will stop now and enjoy what I now love is the movies! They will also show movies on the beach every night as you can see with this great screen!

I have decided to sit beach side then stay for movies after.

Battements Par Minute // Robin Campillo (In Competition – Feature Films)

8:30 – Grand Théâtre Lumière

15:00 – Grand Théâtre Lumière

 18:30 – Grand Théâtre Lumière

Early 1990s. With AIDS having already claimed countless lives for nearly ten years, Act up-Paris activists multiply actions to fight general indifference.
Nathan, a newcomer to the group, has his world shaken up by Sean, a radical militant, who throws his last bits of strength into the struggle.

The Square // Ruben Östlund (In Competition – Feature Films)

11:30 – Grand Théâtre Lumière

14:00 – Soixantième Theatre

22:00 – Grand Théâtre Lumière

Christian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum, a divorced but devoted father of two who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next show is “The Square”, an installation which invites passersby to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings. But sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: Christian’s foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile, the museum's PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for ”The Square”. The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis.

Lu Guo Wei Lai (Walking Past The Future) // Ruijun Li (Un Certain Regard)

11:30 – Un Certain Regard

For Yang Yaoting, a second generation migrant who works at a production line, hope is faint and the job is dehumanizing. Her parents came to this megacity 25 years ago from their agricultural background, hoping to leave behind a harsh reality for a land of dreams. But in a whirlwind that sweeps them off their feet, they realize that the ground they stand on is an illusion in the first place, and wonder if their dream is after all to be found with ploughs and sickles, underneath the very piece of land they left behind. They are harrowed to find, upon returning, that it has long forgotten them too. Feeling rootless, and in all her desperation to belong, Yaoting readies herself to sacrifice her life for the future of her family, just as they once sacrificed their future for her life.

Las Hijas De Abril (April’s Daughter) // Michael Franco (Un Certain Regard)

14:15 – Debussy Theatre

Valeria is 17 and pregnant. She lives in Puerto Vallarta with Clara, her half-sister. Valeria has not wanted her long-absent mother, April, to find out about her pregnancy, but due to the economic strain and the overwhelming responsibility of having a baby in the house, Clara decides to call their mother. April arrives, willing to help her daughters, but soon it will be clear why Valeria had kept her away.

Wind River // Tylor Sheridan (Un Certain Regard First Film)

10:00 – Debussy Theatre

WIND RIVER is a chilling thriller that follows a rookie FBI agent who teams up with a local game tracker with deep community ties and a haunted past to investigate the murder of a local girl on a remote Native American Reservation in the hopes of solving the mysterious death. Written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, WIND RIVER also stars Gil Birmingham, Jon Bernthal, Julia Jones, Kelsey Asbille, and James Jordan.

Le Venerable W. (The Venerable W.) // Barbet Schroeder (Special Screening)

19:00 – Soixanième Theatre

In Burma, the “Venerable Wirathu” is a highly influential Buddhist monk. Meeting him amounts to traveling to the heart of everyday racism and observing how Islamophobia and hate speech lead to violence and destruction. Yet this is a country in which 90% of the population has adopted Buddhism as a faith: a religion based on a peaceful, tolerant and non-violent way of life.

Promised Land // Eugene Jarecki (Special Screening)

19:15 – Buñuel Theatre

Set against the 2016 presidential election, PROMISED LAND takes a musical road trip across America in Elvis Presley's 1963 Rolls Royce. The mission, forty years after the singer's death, is to find the country he left behind – a nation that, like Elvis, started out young, beautiful, and promising, yet succumbed over time to the corrosive influences of addiction, money, and power.
PROMISED LAND paints a cultural portrait of the American dream at a critical time in the nation’s history. It explores, through music and verité, how a country boy lost his authenticity and became a “King,” while his country lost her democracy and became an empire.

Wind River A film by Taylor Sheridan, Wind River brings attention to the dangerous lives of Native American woman, and life on a reservation. However, some very violent parts of the film were extemely hard to watch. The story was powerful and on multiple occasions I found myself moved to tears.  O...

Women in Motion: Diane Kruger

$

0

Women in Motion by Kering concluded today their third edition, conversing with Women in the film business about their experience and their contribution to equal rights for women in the industry. The guest of today's talk was actress Diane Kruger, who spoke about being an actress in the US and Europe, the differences and the fight women are giving to get equal pay and equal treatment within the competitive industry.

Here's a video excerpt from the talk:

About Diane Kruger

She starred in In the Fade, Fatih Akin's latest film in the Official Competition, where she plays a mother who lost her child and her husband in a bomb attack. A powerful film about the mourning, injustice and revenge that rest on the shoulders of Diane Kruger, who plays for the first time in German, just like her heroine and fetish actress Romy Schneider. Having played the main roles in the films by Fabienne Berthod and recently in Alice Winocour’s Maryland, she feels very concerned about the question of women’s place in cinema. "Women filmmakers basically have a different view than men filmmakers, it’s deeper," she says. "I think they put the female characters at the center, not at the service of the male roles.” For her, women filmmakers do not get too tied up with seduction. They go straight to the point, and make a cinema that’s more honest. As for the evolution of women's position in the film industry, Diane Kruger is reasonably optimistic: "Even if it’s still incredibly difficult to occupy a place, they manage more and more to create their own space, and each one must do it, and demand, for example, that the actresses be paid the same as the actors!”  The emancipation movement must also come take hold in television with series such as The Bridge, in which Diane Kruger plays the lead role of a criminal investigator. Diane Kruger is stepping for the first time behind the camera to make a short film to encourage young women to dare entering the scientific field. An area that fascinates her, so much so, that she trying her hand at producing a mini-series about Heddi Lamar, a great and misunderstood scientist from the 1940s. "This may enable a new generation to identify with a remarkable woman. Seeing the journey of women like Heddi Lamar can create a purpose." she said with conviction at the final Women in Motion 2017 talk.

Diane Kruger's biography

Heroine of the latest film by Fatih Akin, In the Fade, a thriller in the Official Competition, where she plays a woman who wants to avenge the death of her husband and son in a bomb attack. Diane Kruger returns to the Croisette, but this time she’s on the other side of the fence as a contender in the Official Competition. After having been mistress-of-ceremonies for the 2007 Festival de Cannes, then member of the jury in 2012 under the presidency of Nanni Moretti, Diane Kruger is in competition this year for the Prix d’interpretation. From Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds to Farewell My Queen by Benoit Jacquot, the German actress has already had the opportunity to display her wide range of talents, and no matter what the director’s language. She is also remembered in the very beautiful role Fabienne Berthod gave her in Sky in 2015, a French director she’s teamed up with and shared an affinity with since her first film Frankie

New York: Tribeca Film Festival 2017, April 19-30

The Tribeca Film Festival 2017 offered an expanded version with more documentaries, greater emphasis on current political issues, and the addition of several new program elements.  It retained its eclectic nature but has grown into a veritable market of diversified and well received products, reflecting the ecosystem of media and leaving in its programs no relevant approaches, technologies, and communication platforms untouched. Certainly, films remain a cornerstone and the attraction of the festival is reflected by the large number of productions submitted to the fest. Close to 8,000 were submitted this year including 3,372 features.  A team of 40 programmers and screeners selected 97 features of which 45 were documentaries.

Overall the film content of Tribeca’s increasingly diversified program encompassing many non-film fields declined by 20% compared to last year. More virtual reality products were shown this year. Tribeca presented 30 VR projects, premiering most of them. There is a widely shared conviction that Tribeca is an outstanding venue for first class documentaries, a view cemented by this year’s selection of mostly issue or problem oriented productions. Few set objectives guided the selection, though environmental issue and activism were emphasized topics fitting nicely the thematic range of currently produced documentaries. The impact of Netflix, Amazon, and HBO as well as the rise of other video on demand services has established a growing market for independent non-fiction productions. It seems that the festival has become more international since more foreign productions were included in the program as well as a growing number of co-productions.  Whereas in the early days of the festival questions were raised about the disposition of films shown at the fest, it seems clear that a market function of Tribeca has emerged. 60 film productions from last year’s festival have found distributors.  As in past years, most public screenings were sold out, maintaining the box office as an important revenue stream for the fest.  On April 29 Tribeca programmed for its closing night screening The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II in Radio City Music Hall followed by a panel with prominent members of the cast of both productions including luminaries like Francis F. Coppola, Al Pacino, Robert Duval, Robert de Niro and Diane Keaton. The venue, with its 6,000 seats, was sold out and the panel transmitted on the internet had 977, 876 hits.  Whether there were important shifts in the private and corporate or public sector funding for the fest could not be ascertained, though a new initiative by AT&T, the principle sponsor of the festival stands out. Established in 2010 and still unique in the film festival field is the Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Award which rewards individuals and institutions for ground breaking achievements. Among the  awardees this year were IBM for its Watson cognitive computer system that is instrumental in the artificial intelligence sector,  the GIF search engine GIPHY  serving more than 100 thousand daily users from popular culture and arts and Mike Ebeling who developed with other inventors a 3D printing system for producing a prosthetic limbs,  as well as Vivian D. Nixon who facilitates access to higher education for women with criminal records and is an activist in the criminal justice reform field.

Numerous programs run by Tribeca and its film institute support young film makers. AT&T provided funding for AT&T Presents: Untold Stories, a new program for underrepresented minorities. The Tribeca Film Institute curates the project selecting through a greenlight committee one film maker to receive $1 million and $10,000 each for four finalist filmmakers to achieve their career goals. The finished film will premiere at the 2018 film festival and be shown on AT&T’s video platforms. This new initiative between AT&T and the non-profit Tribeca Film Institute is a multi-year cooperative venture.  The partnership synchs with a competition for young filmmakers, The America I Am (TAIA) which was held for the second time spotlighting the next generation of diverse story tellers selected this year from 200 applicants. The five finalists were matched with a professional filmmaker and the grand prize winner will receive $10,000. Another new partnership has been formed by Tribeca Games and Kill Screen which launched the Tribeca Games Festival. It shares insights into the most fascinating games of the past year as well as interactions with industry leaders and game insiders. In 2011 Tribeca was the first major film festival to include gaming in its regular program.

The festival screened some television productions last year but this year’s edition presented a considerable expansion of television programs made for traditional and digital distribution. In the Tribeca TV group many of these productions were season and new series world premieres including a sneak preview and TV pilots.  Tribeca opened this year for the first time submissions of independently produced TV pilots. Among the channels or companies providing these programs were Comedy Central, Showtime, National Geographic, Hulu, Hulu/MGM, Spike TV, Universal Cable Productions, CNN, SEESO/NBC, Netflix and PBS.  The Handmaid’s Tale, produced by Hulu/MGM was probably the most discussed series and received more press coverage than other Tribeca programs.

As noted, Tribeca presented 45 documentaries this year. The number of submission was higher than last year.  This growth may respond to the Netflix effect noted by Indiewire. More VOD streaming services acquire for the domestic and international markets. Netflix, Amazon, Hulu have an expanding global presence as do subscription cable giants like HBO and Showtime as well as the remaining  theatrical buyers. Their acquisition budgets are growing steadily and these companies have been among the biggest documentary buyers at major film festivals. On the other side there are a growing number of filmmakers who produced documentaries using relatively low cost digital media compared to traditional film making. For the home audience the bigger screens provide much improved images and sound. In the United States theatrical box office revenue has remained stagnant over the last years as has been the number of screens. At home viewing is becoming more popular.

The presence of many issue oriented documentaries was noteworthy. Among the compelling and mostly premiering productions were The Third Industrial Revolution, Eddy Moretti, USA 2017. This groundbreaking documentary presents Jeremy Rifkin and his updated cogent and compelling interpretation of the global economic crisis we are facing as first enunciated in his 2011 book with the same title. Mostly presented in the lecture format Rifkin reviews current issues such as rapidly growing social disparities, the exhaustion of natural resources, the destruction of the environment, and declining economic growth and productivity. These require fast action to achieve sustainable development. The third industrial revolution merges new communication technologies, the progressive development of alternative energy sources and new modes of transportation.

Manifesto, Julian Rosefelt, Germany 2017 is a feature length hybrid documentary of an installation presented by Rosefelt in Germany and the New York Armory. In a series of film vignettes Cate Blachett plays different characters which question through quotes from the manifestos of eminent writers from Karl Marx  to Lars von Trier’s Dogme 95 the nature of art, the role of communication, and the impact of science. Blanchett’s spellbinding performance, morphing through widely different characters and their contexts, celebrates storytelling and its power to undermine our preconceptions. This is similar to Rifkin’s assault on our socio economic background assumptions.

The Family I Had, Katie Green & Carlyle Rubin, USA 2017, introduces the viewer to a character study of the members of a boundary breaking pathological family. The portrayal relies solely on the testimony of its members spanning three generations. No outside experts or the filmmakers shape your perception of the story. Charity is a single mother and former drug addict whose 13 year old son, Paris, kills his 4 year old sister Ella. He now spends his life in prison and will not qualifies for a parole hearing until 2033. Charity’s mother Kyla had several dysfunctional marriages, fought  a drug and liquor problem and spent some time in jail before she was acquitted from the charge of murdering her husband. Both daughter and mother agree that they were involved with problematic male figures and that they have been manipulating each other. Charity still suspects that Kyla killed her father and says she was not close to Paris, an assessment Kyla also makes about her own relationship with her daughter. Kyla admits that she is not normal and that mental illness runs in the family. Paris, who is more articulate than his mother and grandmother emphasizes his detachment from them but claims to be very close to Phoenix his sibling which Charity had after Paris was imprisoned. Charity thinks that Ella was killed because Paris wanted to have her by him.  At one point Charity is told by an expert that Paris is a sociopath and three months before Ella was killed Kyla learned from a psychiatrist that Paris had homicidal tendencies.  The Family I had is an outstanding and disturbing documentary that offers superb insights into the psychopathology of a family. The filmmakers show an amazing ability to extract from the family members information about their interpersonal relations and the issues they have confronted, information that most people would hide.

A Gray State, Erik Nelson, USA, 2017.   Exec produced by Werner Herzog this production reconstructs the life of David Crowly, who served in Iraq and crowdfunded a trailer for a planned film.  As planned, the film would depict a future US society where governmental agencies have taken over, civil liberties have disappeared and the population forced to live under an oppressive government. The trailer and controversial film project was widely acclaimed by conservative and libertarian communities. His five years of  work on Gray State seemed bound for success given his cinematic expertise and military service background. Yet in early  January 2015 David Crowley, his wife, and their young daughter were found dead in their home.  Given the perspective of his project many argued that a shadow US agency had killed him to prevent disclosures.  Nelson and Herzog reviewed Crowley’s vast archives of photos, home videos as well as footage of his work in progress to investigate the alleged government interference. It turns out that he and his family isolated themselves during the last year of their life, withdrawing from social interaction and that there was no evidence of an outside interference.

The Handmaid’s Tale premiered at Tribeca as a new series produced for HULU/MGM by Bruce Miller.  Based on Margaret Atwood’s book about a modern society the series envisions a dystopian future. The adapted film version reminds us of the present. As Elisabeth Moss who plays Offred in the series observed, Atwood provided revelations similar to messages of 1984 and Brave New World. We encounter in the handmaid’s world the United States transformed into Gilead, a society characterized by a strict Christian fundamentalist ideology where men dominate and women are relegated to the role of servants and if found fertile surrogate tombs. Gilead has been impoverished by past wars and environmental disasters which led to general infertility. Now a strict class structure prevails with gender as a determining factor. The ability to bear children is of great importance. Homosexuality and transgender sex changes are therefore crimes severely punished and power is maintained through torture and death penalties.  The secret service, rather than uniformed police, ensures law and order.  Offred, the principal character had been kidnapped and indoctrinated for her role as a surrogate womb. Her training emphasized the evils of sex and prostitution and the merits of religion which created Gilead. Like the other handmaids she is attached to a senior government functionary of Gilead to bear his children which his wife cannot deliver. She shares the fate of other handmaids who are restricted to shopping and the institutionalized rape performed once a month. Called celebration, the act is performed with brief prayers from the husband while Offred sits in the lap of his wife. Minor infractions are penalized. Handmaids are not allowed to read or engage in communication. But she overcomes her programming and recalls her past life in an open democratic society. Her flashbacks and self-reflection reveal her changes and the degradation of the society she lived in and its transformation into a patriarchal dictatorship. All women were fired from their work and deprived of access to money thus made dependent on men. The series received widespread praise because of the intelligence permeating its presentation and the apparent links to trends in our society.

Tribeca included in its program some outstanding features. The selection showcased November and Tom of Finland which were acquired by Oscilloscope Laboratories and Kino Lorber.  November is an Estonian film, shot in black and white and directed by Rainer Sarnet. Co-produced with the Netherlands and set in the 19th century Estonia it is a fairy tale love story narrated with imagery derived from ancient Estonian folktales and myths. Impoverished people were trading their souls for power, miracles and protection in a village beset by poverty, the plague, wolves and ghosts.  Kratts are objects the villagers construct to acquire their souls.  What makes November most appealing is the superb cinematography. Tom of Finland, Dome Karukoski, Finland, 2017 (co-produced by Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany) is a superbly executed biopic of Touko Laaksonen, who came to be known as Tom of Finland. Touko expressed his gay phantasies in many drawings of daring male sexual encounters embodied in muscular bodies. Touko’s had to hide his homosexuality and homoerotic drawings because of the moral climate of Finland in the forties and fifties. He was subjected to police crackdowns and harassment when he engaged in hidden affairs.  His art was published in the United States and he visited the West Coast leaving his secret life.
