Melbourne Documentary Film Festival Calling

melbourne%20docs200.gif

April 16, 2017 Extended deadline

The Melbourne Doc Fest each year curates world class features direct from some of the hottest most prestigious documentary film festivals in the world like Sheffield Doc Fest, Traverse City Film Festival Doc NYC, SXSW, Doc Edge and IDFA. But what matters to us most is documentaries that are well-made, compelling, thought provoking, passionate and relevant to Australian audiences.

The Melbourne Doc Fest is one of the world newest documentary film festivals and one of the most fun and interesting stop overs on the international documentary film festival circuit. It is the only festival in Australasia to provide feedback on submissions. ...

Good luck filmmakers!

In a parallel dimension, censorship has been rescinded from all movies and television so people can do and say almost anything on TV. As a result, everyone in the country watches television day and night. It is a national addiction. Enter Dusty Velvet, whose husband has been “taken” for service in the national armed forces. The chances of him surviving are slim because wars have broken out all over Iraq & Iran and the only way to get him back is to “buy” him back from the military for $500,000. A new reality “game show” is on the air offering $1M for the contestant who can last sixty days in a solitary confinement chamber with nothing but a bed, table and toilet. A video camera watches each of the contestants 24/7 and it is the hottest show on television. Dusty Velvet is chosen as a contestant and is slowly becoming the newest “American Idol” for her antics inside the chamber. However, after a long period in darkness and isolation, things suddenly take a horrid turn for the worse in this tale from the darker side of reality.

"They were forced beyond breaking point; they have no regrets, does that make them bad people? The first part of this film will enrage you ! The second part will sate you !". Bruno Chatelin - Filmfestivals.com

A retired couple, Bernard and Helen Martin, inherit a remote house in rural France, the very same village Bernard’s war hero father liberated during the Second World War, over 70 years earlier. This peaceful couple quickly become the target of a crual gang of street kids, who terrorise the village.

An e-generation permanently plugged into their devices, devoid of empathy, a new breed of technological psychopath…Pushed beyond breaking point, can Bernard live up to his father’s legend, as the situation explodes into a brutal war of generations ?

George A. Romero Will Be the Guest of Honour of the 13th Grossmann Festival

$

We proudly announce that the greatest and most important contemporary horror director George A. Romero is coming to the 13th edition of Grossmann Fantastic Film and Wine Festival that will take place between the 11th and the 15th of May in Ljutomer, Slovenia.

His influence on contemporary cinema cannot be overestimated. He made history already with his first feature Night of the Living Dead (1968) which has caused a revolution within genre cinema. With this film, horror has irreversibly entered the modern age and left behind all the old movies which suddenly became old fashioned, harmless and even naive.  It was one of the most successful independent films in the history of cinema, while even the US Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry, which is an honour only seldomly given to films of that genre. Together with its sequels Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Day of the Dead (1985) it forms one of the most influential film trilogies of all time. Just take a look at today’s media landscape, you will have a hard time avoiding zombies. They became the dominant cultural fear and at the same time the essential political metaphor for the exploitation and numbness of the masses.

Last year, Night of the Living Dead has been digitally restored by New York’s Museum of Modern Art and The Film Foundation. After numerous special screenings at prestigious festivals, such as Berlinale and Venice, not attended by George A. Romero, this glorious genre milestone will be screened at this year’s Grossmann in the presence of the author. Our program will also feature a special retrospective of his films and a Master Class, and of course you’re all invited to the festival closing ceremony to honour him when he will receive the honorary Vicious Cat award.

Befitting this year’s theme, there will be a Special Makeup Effects Workshop led by none other than the legendary Sergio Stivaletti. Europe’s greatest special and makeup FX grandmaster has collaborated on more than 50 films with directors such as Dario Argento, Michele Soavi, Lamberto Bava and Gabriele Salvatores. He is also the founder of the unique special effects school Fantastic Forge which is based in Rome. More information on this special workshop will be available soon. You will be able to see the result of the workshop at our Zombie Walk which will be the most spectacular to date. It will take place on the last day of the festival. And you’re all invited!

You will be also able to participate in numerous other film workshops (also for children), attend expert lectures and book presentations and enjoy daily music events, all accompanied by exclusive wine tastings where you will help select the best wine in the festival competition. And don’t worry, free camping is provided!

Stay tuned for details regarding our festival program and guests which will keep on showing up on the festival website.

20th UNAFF (UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION FILM FESTIVAL

October 19-29, 2017 Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, San Francisco and Stanford University - celebrates the power of international documentary films dealing with human rights, the environment, refugees, famine, homelessness, racism, disease control, women's issues, children, universal education, war and peace.

This year’s theme RESPECT continues our two decades long celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with the reminder that it applies to everyone.

UNAFF was established in 1998 to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was founded by Stanford educator and film critic Jasmina Bojic. UNAFF, whose theme for this year is “RESPECT", is an international documentary film festival held from October 19-29 2017 in Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, San Francisco and Stanford University.

As one of the oldest solely documentary film festivals in the US, UNAFF has grown and earned the respect of audiences and filmmakers alike for its fearless independence and integrity. In addition to providing early outlets for films, many of which later went on to win major awards and accolades, UNAFF prides itself in creating a community forum for discovery and dialogue about different cultures, issues and solutions.

Each year that the UNAFF has been held, the festival has screened films from all over the world - Asia, the South Pacific, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. The festival has attracted a broad audience with regards to ethnicity, many finding the screenings to be a rare chance to see the state of human rights and culture in their own native countries. Last year UNAFF jurors carefully reviewed over 700 submissions. Our final program consisted of 60 films related to issues from almost 60 countries.

UNAFF screened some of the most awarded and talked about documentaries in the industry including seven that went on to win Academy Awards ("Panama Deception,""Thoth", "The Blood of Yingzhou District", "Freeheld", "Taxi to the Dark Side", "Inocente" and "Saving Face") and thirty that were nominated ("Regret to Inform", "Genghis Blues","Long Night's Journey Into Day", "LaLee's Kin: The Legacy of Cotton", "Promises", "Daughter from Danang","When Abortion was Illegal", "Twist of Faith", "God Sleeps in Rwanda", "War /Dance", "Trouble The Water", “Salim Baba”, “The Garden”, “Burma VJ”, “China’s Unnatural Disaster – The Tears of Sichuan Province", "The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers", "Rabbit a la Berlin", "Gasland", "Killing In the Name", "Which Way Home", "Waste Land", "The Barber of Birmingham: Foot Soldier of The Civil Rights Movement" and "Karama Has No Walls", "Facing Fear", "King’s Point", "Prison Terminal: The Last Days Of Private Jack Hall", "White Earth" and "Dirty Wars", "The Poster Girl" and "Last Day of Freedom").

Documentaries often elicit a very personal, emotional response that encourages dialogue and action by humanizing global and local problems. To further this goal, UNAFF hosts academics and filmmakers from around the world to discuss the topics in the films with the audience, groups and individuals who are often separated by geography, ethnicity and economic constraints.

Apart from bringing the best international documentaries to our audiences during the festival days each October, we have developed multiple year-round programs which engage a growing segment of our community. Our popular “UNAFF Traveling Film Festival” has taken place in San Francisco, Berkeley, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Davis, Saratoga, Sonoma, Sebastopol, San Diego, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Honolulu, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington DC, New York, Burlington, Bellevue, Miami, La Crosse, Fryeburg, Houston, Denver, Chapel Hill, Durham at Duke University, New Haven at Yale University, Waukesha at University of Wisconsin, Boston and Cambridge at Harvard University and internationally in Paris, Venice, Belgrade, Phnom Penh and Abu Dhabi. Through “UNAFF and Kids” and “UNAFF in Schools” programs we have devoted our attention to the young and to the wiser among us with the “UNAFF for Seniors”. The “UNAFF Panels” program provides a platform for some of the best experts addressing challenging topics and our “UNAFF Café” maintains a steady supply of interesting films and informal discussions. “UNAFF Archive” offers a plethora of research material for students of film, politics and international relations, "UNAFF With Veterans" brings documentaries to veterans and their families and
"UNAFF Women Salon" is targeting women who may, may not otherwise find time for the regular screenings, in environment which encourages active discussion and engagement.

UNAFF gives five cash awards: the UNAFF Grand Jury Awards for Best Documentary, Best Short Documentary, UNAFF Youth Vision Award, UNAFF/Stanford Video Award for Cinematography and UNAFF/Stanford Video Award for Editing.

We are proud that UNAFF has twice won the WAVE Awards for best promotional trailer and the prestigious Earl W. Eames Award for innovatively combining new technologies with traditional media. As an acknowledgment of the 10th anniversary, UNAFF received the “Community Treasure Award” from Stanford University President John Hennessy for its contribution in promoting dialogue and education about different cultures and issues. For the last fourteen years the Mayor of Palo Alto has proclaimed the festival days as UNAFF Week, consistently recognizing the significance that UNAFF has for the community. Most recently, UNAFF received the prestigious Academy Foundation Grant for the “UNAFF and Kids” program, which will have its eight presentation this year.

This year's Tribeca Film Festival is another a great opportunity to see some great films, join some exciting discussions about movies, and even to rub shoulder with some of your favorite celebrities.

The Festival was founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2001 to spur the economic and cultural revitalization of lower Manhattan following the attacks on the World Trade Center. With strong roots in independent film, the annual event has evolved into a destination for creativity, reimagines the cinematic experience, and explores how art can unite communities.

The festival will run from April 19th through the 30th.

IIFBoston 2017 Pre-fest: It Stays With You

$

The tag line for Independent Film Festival Boston 2017 is “It Stays With You”.  In my case, that is certainly true.  You’ll see what I mean in a bit.  First, some back story.

A year ago Sunday, I was in the latter stages of moving.  My then-landlord was… not the best at maintenance, to be charitable.  The house was near the beach, which meant you had to keep an eye on the wood weathering from the salt air.  The front door threshold had been in need of repair for a couple of years.

On this particular Sunday, I was coming down the stairs with my hands full and only a dozen or so boxes left upstairs.  Almost done.  As I shifted my weight to my left foot on the threshold, the rotting wood at long last failed and sagged beneath me.  With no way to catch myself (hands full), my leg folded up like a carpenter’s ruler and I spilled out face first onto the front porch, half in and half out of the house.

While my girlfriend (Lisa) and our neighbor (Greg) rushed over from the basement and his yard, respectively, I rolled over and dragged my legs onto the porch.  My left leg showed a dramatic difference in height between my kneecap and my thigh.  I knew instantly that either my kneecap was seriously dislocated, or I had snapped my quad tendon, letting all that muscle meat roll up towards my hip, like a rubber band released at one end.  A quick flex of my foot ruled out dislocation, because I didn’t scream or black out when I did it.  OK.  So, “quad tendon” it is…

Fortunately, I was able to remind Lisa where she could find some crutches in the basement that we hadn’t moved yet, and I was able to get down the stairs from the porch to the driveway.  That was easy enough that I foolishly thought “I might be OK” and tried to put some weight on my injured leg.  Really, really bad idea.  Quite painfully bad, in fact.  Note to self: Don’t do that again.  The three of us managed to get me into the passenger seat of Lisa’s car and she drove me to Massachusetts General Hospital.

After several hours in the emergency room, I was told what I already knew.  I had a ruptured quad tendon that would need reattachment surgery.  As they were explaining the options, I interjected “tomorrow”. “Are you sure?”  “What could I possibly have to do that is more important than re-connecting my leg?  I want you to fix it before it knows it’s broken.”  As luck would have it, the Chief of Ortho Trauma Surgery was on call the next morning.  This is the kind of guy that gets shipped to Haiti to deal with mass casualties after an earthquake.  One of the best of the best would be knitting my body back together.

As I lay there in the hospital bed Sunday night, awaiting early morning restoration of my ability to flex my leg on command, I thought: “IFFB opens in three days.  That’s a tight window.”  I kid you not.

“Let’s see… Surgery Monday.  Post-surgical observation for 24-hours.  Release Tuesday.  That should give me time to adjust to the crutches and be at IFFB for Wednesday night.  I’ll have to take the T (Boston’s subway) because I can’t drive (my car is standard, and I can’t work the clutch without a functioning left leg) unless I can get Lisa to drive me.”

I was assuming that I could have my leg explode internally one day, have it opened up, stretched, drilled (tendon has to go into the kneecap), and stitched back together the next, and then go back to life on the third day as if nothing had happened.

I blame the morphine…

Surgery went well Monday and it looked as if I would be all set by Tuesday morning.  Somehow, after Tuesday rounds, a box didn’t get checked that said “release the Kraken” (me being the Kraken here), so the case manager thought it best to keep me another night to be safe.  We could check with the surgeons the next morning to verify that I was OK to go home.

My first thought? “Crap!  If I don’t get released until Wednesday, there’s no way that Lisa’s going to drive me straight from MGH to Opening Night!”  (Because, you see, she’s not insane.)

“Hey… are you sure I have to stay another night…?”  So, yes, I was – in the moment – prioritizing a successful surgical outcome behind the slimming chance of my getting to IFFBoston Opening Night.

Again, I’m assuming there was morphine involved.

Wednesday did bring departure, but it took until the afternoon just as rush hour was starting.  From the back seat of Lisa’s car (where I could keep my leg straight by sitting sideways) I offered: “I don’t suppose you’d drive me to Somerville for IFF…”  She shot me a look in the rear view.  “Yeah… probably best to just go home.”  Once home, I spent the next couple of days learning to navigate my house, dog, hygiene, nutrition, and sleep with only one leg and my hands full of crutches whenever I wasn’t seated.

By Saturday, Lisa took pity on me.  She drove me first to Somerville to pick up my badge, then to Brattle to see Ian Cheney’s latest doc, Bluespace.  I had seen his prior films The Greening of Southie (2008), The City Dark (2011), and The Search for General Tso (2014) all at IFFBoston in past years (I think I caught King Corn (2007) elsewhere), so I was happy to keep the set intact at least.

With the help of various friends, I was able to catch a handful of other films throughout the rest of the IFFB 2016, including:

  • High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell– a 20th anniversary screening of this chillingly raw documentary about lives swept up in the scourge of crack in the 1990s that has echoes in the opioid epidemic of current times.  The Q&A revelations of what happened after the filming stopped were expectedly sad, but unexpectedly joyous as well.
  • Mike Birbiglia’s Don’t Think Twice– a fictionalized look at the world of improv comedy portrayed by a cadre of comedic actors.
  • Closing Night’s The Intervention– Clea DuVall’s feature directorial debut, where an ensemble cast gathers for a weekend retreat to stage a relationship intervention for one of the couples in attendance.

I also got the experience of seeing the IFFB – and, in the following months, the world – through a different set of eyes.  I got to walk in someone else’s shoes while only using one leg.

I learned where all of the accessibility features (ramps, elevators, seating, …) are in the various theaters – and then on mass transit, office buildings, airplanes, and so on.  I found how considerate most people seem to be - offering a seat, a spare set of hands, a ride, or even just personal space – despite the blue-screen-assisted self-absorption characteristic of the times.  Where I used to favor aisle seats that left my right arm free to write without poking a neighbor, I now reflexively grab the seats across the aisle that let me stretch my left leg, which still doesn’t like being in one position for the length of a film.  The gentle easing into my new, if short-lived, state of life in friendly surroundings was quite helpful.

What was also telling was the absence of so much of what I look forward to at this time of year every year for the last decade or so.  The missing of it.  I didn’t get to walk from screening to screening.  I didn’t get to race by T or car from Somerville to Brattle and/or back.  I didn’t get to spend the six weeknights and every waking weekend hour awash in films and friends – and popcorn and frozen Kit Kats.  The drive to not miss out completely was compelling enough that, literally (literally literally, not figuratively "literally"), the first thing I did after the injury that was voluntary was go to IFFBoston.

All of this has stayed with me for the last year, as I have ached and healed and learned to walk again with still-diminishing limp.

As the clock ticks down to Opening Night of IFFBoston 2017, I can’t express any better than I have above what it will mean to me to walk – to make the pilgrimage - into the Somerville Theater tonight.

On my own two feet.

Maybe I’ll see you there.

The 15th edition of the Independent Film Festival Boston runs from April 26 – May 3, 2017.  Details can be found at iffboston.org.
