The 64th Sydney Film Festival today announced 28 prominent new films to be featured in this year’s 7-18 June event,
The 64th Sydney Film Festival today announced 28 prominent new films to be featured in this year’s 7-18 June event, and the first of over 150 Festival guests: award-winning British filmmaker Nick Broomfield, director of the hotly anticipated Whitney Houston documentary Whitney ‘Can I Be Me’.
Also revealed in advance of the full program launch of 200+ films on Wednesday 10 May is a new Festival location: Randwick’s iconic Ritz Cinema.
“These films bring together thousands of talents and perspectives from across the globe, to create a lens - a way of looking at and experiencing aspects of the world and ourselves,” Sydney Film Festival Director Nashen Moodley said. “And it’s as entertaining as it is enlightening.”
“From the view backstage with Whitney Houston to the view from the top in Mountain or An American Werewolf in London viewed through the windscreen of your car, the 2017 Festival is a collection of film from every angle, from everywhere, for every kind of film lover.”
Leading the pack…
Leading the titles announced today in the Festival’s sneak peek is high-profile documentary Whitney ‘Can I Be Me’, Nick Broomfield’s never-before-seen backstage look at the height of six-time Grammy winner Whitney Houston’s stardom. Also topping the list are non-traditional horror A Ghost Story, starring Oscar winner Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) and Rooney Mara (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), and Filipino independent filmmaker Lav Diaz’s haunting drama The Woman Who Left, winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
Industry masterclass guest
The first of many Festival guests to be announced is award-winning filmmaker Nick Broomfield (Whitney ‘Can I Be Me’) who is renowned for his iconoclastic documentaries Kurt & Courtney, Biggie and Tupac, Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer, Soldier Girls and the dramas Battle for Haditha and Ghosts. He will also be presenting an industry masterclass at the Festival.
True stories
Highly anticipated true stories include Oscar-nominated I Am Not Your Negro: a timely perspective on race in America using the words of James Baldwin narrated by Samuel L. Jackson. Controversial post-apartheid South African first lady Winnie Madikizela-Mandela gets an extensive portrait in Winnie, and Rumble: Indians Who Rocked the World is a celebratory examination of Native American musicians and their role in the development of American popular music. Ethan Hawke and Sally Hawkins (Happy Go Lucky, SFF 2008) star in Maudie, based on the life story of Canada’s best known folk artist Maud Lewis.
New films from Australia and New Zealand
Closer to home, the Festival will premiere the new Australian feature That’s Not Me, a hilarious local indie with a strong Australian cast including Isabel Lucas and actor-writer-producer Alice Foulcher. Mountain is a new documentary from acclaimed Australian director Jennifer Peedom (Sherpa – SFF 2015) with a score created by Richard Tognetti and performed by the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Controversial documentary The Opposition is finally screening at Sydney Film Festival after being suppressed by a court order last year, as well as Spookers, a look into the inner workings of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest horror theme park and the tight-knit New Zealand family who run it.
New venue
In 2017 the Festival will continue to bring films from the world’s top film festivals to venues across Sydney including for the first time at Randwick’s Ritz Cinema – celebrating its 80th birthday this year. The State Theatre, Dendy Opera Quays, the Art Gallery of NSW, Event Cinemas George Street, the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace Cremorne, Dendy Newtown, Casula Powerhouse, and the Skyline Drive In Blacktown return as official festival screening venues. An expanded virtual reality program will also pop up at the Festival Hub at Sydney Town Hall premiering cutting edge films.
Horror at the Drive In
Of the 28 films announced in the preview, 14 are new features and 13 are new documentaries, including 16 Australian Premieres and one retrospective. The retrospective being cult classic Oscar-winning horror comedy An American Werewolf in London, directed by John Landis (The Blues Brothers), screening under the full moon at the Skyline Drive In on Friday 16 June.
Big festival winners
Prestigious new features included in the preview are Amat Escalante’s imaginative drama The Untamed, which won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival for Best Direction. Cristian Mungiu’s tale of moral compromise, Graduation, won the filmmaker the Best Director Prize at Cannes 2016, and Afghanistan’s first female director Shahrbanoo Sadat’s debut feature Wolf and Sheep won the Art Cinema Award at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. Documentary prize-winners include Nowhere to Hide (main award-winner at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam), and three winners from the 2017 Sundance Film Festival; Winnie, Motherland, and Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World.
Quirky hits
Other feature highlights include delightful family animation, the Oscar-nominated My Life as a Zucchini, voiced by Ellen Page (Juno), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) and Will Forte (Saturday Night Live), and Malaysia’s answer to Kill Bill, Mrs K, with an all-star cast including Hong Kong’s leading lady Kara Wai, Taiwanese rockstar Wu Bai, and martial arts film legend Lau Wing.
Outstanding documentaries
Outstanding documentaries remain essential to the Festival, and this year’s program has many award-winners and enthralling themes from factual filmmakers around the world. Untitled is the final film of the late Michael Glawogger (Whores’ Glory - SFF2012), created after his death by collaborator Monika Willi.
Slovenian metal band Laibach and their Latvian-Norwegian film crew get unprecedented access into North Korea in Liberation Day, and Hoop Dreams director Steve James’s David vs Goliath tale Abacus: Small Enough to Jail is a story about America’s financial crisis that actually manages to paint a bank as the small guys.
The Festival is supported by the NSW Government, through Screen NSW and its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, the Federal Government through Screen Australia, and the City of Sydney.
The full Sydney Film Festival program will be announced on Wednesday 10 May at 11am.
Note: Flexipasses and subscriptions to Sydney Film Festival 2017 are on sale now. Please call 1300 733 733 or visit http://www.sff.org.au for more information.

Free Live Performance: Otis Clapp
Come to the Producers Club Lounge for a free live performance by OTIS CLAPP! Reserve your seat today!
Hailing from Queens, New York, Otis buried himself in music from a young age as a means of escaping an unstable and abusive home life. His passion for hip hop drove him from lunchroom cyphers to sharing stages with heavyweights such as Action Bronson, Diplo, J.Cole, Mac Miller, Ab Soul and more. While Otis always scribbled rhymes in the back of the classroom, it wasn't until he heard Common and Sadat-X on “1999” that he realized he wanted a career in hip hop.
By 1999 Otis began writing, producing, mixing and mastering his own music. His diligence paid off in 2011, when Otis was afforded the opportunity to mix and executive produce three projects for YC The Cynic (now known as Kemba), including his 2013 GNK album. This led to a performance opportunity at the four year anniversary of “Comedy at the Knitting Factory,” hosted by Hannibal Buress. Here, Otis performed before Chris Rock's surprise performance and comedian Amy Schumer later co-signed Otis's song "Fiona." In 2014, following his second straight appearance at CMJ week and a special guest performance at the NY Loves Dilla event, Otis performed alongside YC at the Heineken Green Room with Ghostface Killah, and performed at the 2015 Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. One of AllHipHop.com's top 50 underground artists in 2011 and 2012, Otis is set to rekindle flames with his forthcoming Helen Keller EP as well as two other projects in 2017.

Siraj Syed covers CommunicAsia 2017, Singapore: Pre-event, 03: Rohit Talwar and FastFuture
Rohit Talwar, Owner and CEO, Fast Future Research, since 1999, will be delivering this year’s CommunicAsia2017 Summit Visionary Address titled “Artificial Intelligence vs. Genuine Stupidity – Navigating Exponential Technologies to Create a Very Human Future”. The event will he held this year from the 23rd to the 25th of May, and will host key speakers and exhibitors featuring the latest trending technologies such as SatComm, Connect Everywhere, IoT, Security & Cyber-Security.
Rohit Talwar is an award winning global futurist, entrepreneur and specialist advisor on business transformation, disruptive strategies and radical innovation. Fast Future Research provides critical insights to help clients make sense of a rapidly evolving and hyper-connected world. His lecture is scheduled for 24th May, at Marina Bay Sands Exhibition Centre. It will come on the heels of Business 2025 - Pathways to Transformation - An experience in aid of Street Kids International, May 19th, London, where he will be the keynote speaker.
Artificial intelligence, together with big data and IoT, is seen as an enabler that will allow businesses to overcome the hurdles presented by large amounts of generated data and successfully make sense of these for insight and business direction. According to Forrester, AI will drive the insights revolution and by 2020, insights-driven businesses will steal $1.2 trillion per annum from their less informed peers.
“AI coupled with the other rapidly accelerating fields of science and technology will drive large-scale change and transformation of existing businesses and industries while also enabling the creation of entirely new sectors”, says Talwar.
He also predicts that the pace of development and potential of AI means that it is perhaps the most important area of decision making that business leaders will face over the next few years, and the effective implementation of AI will be a crucial differentiator between success and failure of firms in a fast changing world.
Artificial intelligence coupled with other key science and technology developments will help transform the US$78 trillion global economy. Fast Future estimates that by 2025, the economy could grow to US$120 Trillion – with over half coming from AI-enabled industries that either do not exist today or are in their infancy, such as autonomous vehicles, self-replicating machines, and adaptive, personal health management systems.
“The core challenge is to help organisations embrace and adapt to accelerating change and prepare for a world that we can’t yet see but is just around the corner,” adds Talwar. “We will see AI being used for product design, pricing decisions, marketing strategies, training and recruitment. We are already witnessing the emergence of entirely automated ‘employee-less’ AI-based decentralised autonomous organisations (DAOs).”
Offering a preview to the highly anticipated session, Talwar explores the key questions CEOs should be asking as they assess and invest in AI's transformative potential:
1. What's the fuss about?
AI may well drive the most important changes in the philosophy, practice and management of business. AI draws on and is combining with exponential developments in technologies such as computer hardware, big data management, IoT and the fields of machine learning, neural networks, and robotics. As a result, AI is beginning to fulfil its true potential of transforming businesses and even replacing senior management and leadership roles. CEOs have to make sure they are investing the time and attention to understand what AI is, why so much is being invested, and where the opportunities are.
2. What is its potential?
The place to start is to undertake internal analysis of where it could be deployed and what competitors are doing. Medium to large enterprises in particular are bringing in AI experts and creative future thinkers to take a broader perspective of the potential roles AI could play, from smarter production management, to customer targeting and broad-based decision making.
3. Who should lead?
The temptation is to see this as just another IT project and hand responsibility to the CIO (Chief Information Officer. However, some see it having a much broader role and are making it the responsibility of the CEO, COO or business transformation head to drive the identification, piloting and application of AI solutions across all aspects of the business.
4. What would success look like?
With AI, there are likely to be unsuccessful experiments – up to 90 per cent might go under as promising ideas fail to yield viable solutions. The mantra should be to "fail fast and cheap"– bringing in suppliers, customers and other value chain partners early on to see if there is commercial merit in an idea. There can be as much learning from a failed project as a successful one.
5. How do we address social impact?
There is a growing concern that if every firm replaces a large part of its human workforce with smart software and robots, unemployment levels could rise on a permanent basis. Estimates vary from 30 to 80 per cent of all current jobs that could be automated out of existence in the next five to 20 years. As a CEO, how should we address this and the potential criticism that we are creating a two-tier society? Should we support the idea of a guaranteed basic income for all, as is being explored by Canada, Finland and the Netherlands?
La Semaine de la Critique unveils the poster of its 56th edition
Oldest among the parallel sections in Cannes and driven by its mission to reveal new Talents by selecting first and second films, La Semaine de la Critique chose to spotlight for its 56th edition the magical and emotional moment when a film crew meets the very first audiences.
On this poster designed by the Parisian agency les bons faiseurs and the photographer Alice Khol, the young actress Garance Marillier embraces director Julia Ducournau after the screening of her debut feature, Raw, selected in the competition of the 55th Semaine de la Criti que.
